The Deleting the Cache thingy worked for me too! Finally! After searching my but off for the AVG web shield in AVG free 8.5 (it doesn't have one..) that's the solution I was looking for! At first I was told to just delete the contents of the folder but then I just deleted everything in there so now it works again, thanks so much!

the thing for me is that i can sign on onto another computer but i can't do so on my own. another weird thing is that even though i can't sign onto my own computer, other people can do so just fine.

I was so frustrated with this freakin 8100030d error but FINALLY this method worked for me...
I think you should give it a shot if you haven't tried this way yet!

Delete the cache files for Messenger. Follow the steps below based on which version of Operating System that you are using:

Enable Hidden files and Folders:

Windows XP :

1. Click on Start – My Computer (double click on it)
2. On the Tools menu, Click on Folder Options.
3. On the View tab, locate Advanced settings and then follow these steps :
3.a Click Show Hidden Files and Folders
3.b Clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.
3.c Clear Hide file extensions for known file types check box.
4. Click OK and close the Window.

Windows Vista:

1. Click on Start – My Computer (double click on it)
2. In the Explore window, click Organize
3. Choose Folder and Search Options
4. In the Folder options window, click on view tab
5. Select the option “Show Hidden Files and Folders” click Ok

Delete Windows Live Contacts Folders in Windows Live Messenger:

1. Click on Start – Double click on My computer

2. Browse to the location:

(In Windows Vista, C:\Users\(Windows Logon name)\App Data\Local\Microsoft).
(In Windows XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\{Windows logon name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft)

Note: Windows Logon name is the logon name that you use to sign in to windows. Your Messenger email address is the address that you use to sign in to Messenger.

3. Look for Windows Live Contacts folder and delete the entire folder.

Note: Please ensure to exit Messenger even from the task manager before deleting this folder.

4. Try to Sign into Windows Live Messenger again.

Matt Caplin's fix works like a dream! One of my accounts worked but the other didn't either. I was resigning myself to using a web-based service and entertaining thoughts of getting a new account (the horror), but now I don't have to.

Thank you so much!

Nice one Alex nk, I realise now the problem started when I instlled AVG 8.0, I thought it was because I deleted alot of temporary folders on my laptop because I got this Privacy center programme block my startup because, my system was *unprotected*.

None of the standard fixes worked for me. I deleted the wireless network I was using and then added it again and it works.

No idea.

so far i have uninstalled and re installed msn 6 times, after each install it works, once i close it and re sign in, the blooming error comes up again, i can not keep msn open 24/7 nor can i keep uninstalling it :(

It's simple, and it's right there if you read the error messages. Delete/uninstall Windows Live Essentials, Sign-In Assistant, and Upload Tool. Go to Control Panel>Programs>and find those 3. Delete them, and then run the install for WLM 9.0 (14.0)... worked like a charm for me. It must be something to do with a compatibility issue between those and this... but it works! Data...

I know this is extremely old but the thing is .... I have had this problem for ages since i started Uni.
I had it working but fixed it by fixing the host file. I now have this error 8100030d which is a pain in the ass. I can't do anything. I tried every solution and nothing works. I do not have Zone Alarm. Kasperky is not blocking WLM. So what is my problem? Need a solution please.

I did everything you said, but nothing worked for me. So I noticed my MSN was getting this error at a certain time, 6 PM, every day. And I figured something must be going on. I looked around, and apparently, my auto-updates happened at 6 PM. So I turned them off, or set them to another time, I forget which, and 6 PM came around the next day, no error. Try that.

It seems to be a problem with add ons, too. I had Messenger Discovery and I kept getting this, then I uninstalled it, worked perfectly. Try that if you have any add ons and you can't get any of the previous solutions to work.
