If you are running Windows XP try the following steps;
Solution:
Go to a DOS prompt and type in the following OR go to Start -> Run and then copy and paste each line below hitting
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll /s
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll /s
regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s
regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll /s
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll /s
If for some reason you still can't fix this error I highly recommend you to run Registry Easy which is known as best registry repair tool.

Click + by Computer Configuration
Click + by Windows Settings
Click + by Security Settings

For "Allow the following users to select trusted
publishers," the default is "End users."
If you do not have this at all, this does not apply.

The log file contains "Error 0x80092026: The cryptographic operation failed due to a local security option setting.", error. This occurs due to local security setting, to resolve the issue check for "safer" key in registry and delete it.
Locate the following key
Start/Run
Typr "regedit" ENTER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\
SystemCertificates\TrustedPublisher
Under "TrustedPublisher" look for "Safer" key.
Delete the "Safer" key if it is there.

I had two problems on my daughters PC today.
1) Unable to sign into Windows Live Messenger due to error code 8004888d.
2) Windows Automatic Updates could not access website to do new downloads. My daugters PC is running Windows XP Service pack 2.
RESOLUTION - I typed in the commands from the first part of this email as in...
Go to a DOS prompt and type in the following OR go to Start -> Run and then copy and paste each line below hitting after each one.

Afterwards I rebooted the PC. I knew the PC was fixed because Live Messenger automatically kicked in first time around.
My daughter is now very happy, and back able to chat to her friends.

Thanks again for this post! This is probably the third time in the last couple of months that I've had to use this procedure (SO LUCKY I BOOKMARKED THE PAGE :)). Dunno why, but when I try to load my Msn Explorer and it says that the windows live messenger has had to update a critical component or something along those lines then I know that I have to come back to this procedure, otherwise I wont be able to log in to my Msn Explorer account! just restore your system too a few days before it started doing it, and...it should work. :)

Thanks to the person who posted first solution. This works. To those who say who this cannot works, please at least bother to to restart your MSN Live Messenger before you say this doesn't works. Of course it will not work if you don't restart it.

ahmed, you paste the top one in 'run' then press enter/click ok. copy the next line, hit enter/or click ok. do that until you've done each line.

Had the problem on a client's PC and this solution did the trick where others had not - so very many thanks!
But, unfortunately, as others here have commented, the problem can come back. Happily, though, it seems as though it can be fixed again the same way.
So I'd really like to know what's causing the problem and whether it can be prevented from happening.
For the record, on my client's PC, the first time it happened seems to have been after MSN/MSN Explorer carried out some form of automatic update.
Any one have any firm ideas about cause and prevention?

I tried everything posted here, but nothing worked. then I stumbled upon this simple fix and it worked perfectly.
This is for all you others out there having this problem :
(1) Start regeidt
(2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinTrust\Trust Providers\Software Publishing
There you will probably see state 63c00. Change this to 23c00, exit regedit and your life will be much happier.

guys if u think its kinda absurd just copying and pasting those command prompt and in RUN, and when you press ok, nothing comes out, ITS OK. JUST CONTINUE TO COPY AND PASTE TILL THE LAST SENTENCE and all will be good.

Anyone know how this error is triggered?? It seems to me that a lot of people are getting errors and Microsoft isn't even doing anything to prevent it.. at least they could've create an update or a patch to stop the errors from happening.
