Contacts missing from my contacts list?

Delete your Contacts cache folder
If your contact list is empty or incomplete after you upgrade to Windows Live Messenger, the cached contact list may not have updated correctly. Before you can delete your Contacts cache folder, make sure you can view your complete folder list in Windows Explorer.
View your complete folder list

1. On the taskbar, right-click Start, and then select Explore.
2. Click on Tools, and then select Folder Options.
3. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings list, select Show hidden files and folders, make sure Hide extensions for known file types is not selected, and then click OK.
5. In the Windows Explorer window, click View, select Explorer Bar, and then verify that Folders is checked.

Delete your Contacts cache folder
After changing your Windows Explorer settings:

1. On the taskbar, right-click Start, and then select Explore.
2. In the folder list on the left-hand pane, navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows logon name\Contacts\Your Messenger email address.
3. Delete all of the files within the folder Your Messenger email address.
4. In the folder list on the left-hand pane, navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows logon name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Your Messenger email address.
5. In the Your Messenger email address folder, delete the real and shadow folders.
6. Close Windows Explorer and try to sign in to Messenger again.

Hello Messenger help people,

I'm using Live Messenger build#8.1.0178.00 and seem to have a problem with my contactlist.

From time to time my contactlist is ungrouped, so that all contacts are moved to "other contacts".

My custom groups still exist, but they now contain no contacts.
If I move them back to their respective groups, a day or so will go by, and then they will be ungrouped again.

Do you guys have a solution for this?

It doesn't help after i tried all the steps abovementioned. Please advise.

I am not able to backup my contacts from menu Contacts>Save contact list... on my PC
Clicking on the item "Save contact list..." nothing happens. The cursor flashing just little while and any window opens.
Have you any idea how to fix this issue?
Thank you
Giampaolo

I just got a new email address, it is a live.ca address and I am using it with the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. When I went to add contacts some are adding some are not. I checked my privacy and tried adding them to my list from there, they show up for a microsecond and then are gone... I can't send messages to these friends but I can receive them. Still unable to add them to my friends list though. Any solutions?

Grah!

Dx Okay, I'm not sure what Windows version you're talking about. But obviously, that's not Vista. I HATE Vista.

"4. In the folder list on the left-hand pane, navigate to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows logon name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Your Messenger email address."

How does one do that on the demon we call Windows Vista?

E-mail me, please!! I want my contacts back!

I did like you said. My contact list is still non-existant, and so are all the other contacts lists for everyone who sign-in onto this computer.

I've tried uninstalling the Windows Live Messenger program, but I can't seem to find the program file - its not anywhere in the Add/Remove programs list!

Please help out.

I did everything as instructed as well. But it is not working for me as well. I am using XP. So i guess the bug is not related to anything platform, but the quality of Live Messenger itself.

I am officially PISSED. This didn't do a damn thing. I have tried everything listed above and a dozen other things and none of it works. how about this, you "advise" me on how to delete this stupid program. cause now it won't let me do that

Anonymous said...

Tried the above, didn't work. Don't know whether it's a problem with Vista or messenger, either way it's a real pain. Any progress is finding a solution to this problem?

hello, I tried this and it seems to work, but I have the feeling like I might have to do it over and over again? and I don't want to lol

is there like any garantee that this'll work for sure on Windows Live 8.1? if not, I'd like to be able to know if there's another way to do it.

I tried every possible bit of advice out there to make my contacts visible on my whizzbang new netbook, literally only a day old, very frustrating given it was a major reason for buying the damn thing, anyway, clearing contacts cache, unhiding folders, hopping on one foot whilst whistling dixie etc. In the end I completely removed the 2009 version and googled version 8.5. Once downloaded, ta-da! contacts restored.

the big shit is that when i come back to wlm 8 it forces me to upgrade to the latest version 9 which is not displaying the contacts>>> so humiliating

Anonymous said...

another failue by microsoft...tryed everything here...did nothing, about to attempt going back to wlm 8.1. seriously maybe microsoft should start testing their software a little better. as one of the wolrds largist companys this is pathetic and should not happen.

Its simply NOT good enough.

We all are leaving our problems, but to whom?

Solutions anyone?

Anonymous said...

Men my problem apears when I sign in on my mobile. On the desktop I can si over 137 contacts (there is no one missing), but when I sign in on windows live msn on my n95 there are only 31 of them. Can you help me with this????

Anonymous said...

Has anyone tried Ctrl-Shift-F11 at the MSN log-in window to delete all emails, etc. and then have them restored when you log back in? I still have my contacts when I log in via www.msn.com so the problem is probably communication with the MSN servers via the MSN program. The fix in this blog did not work for me. I have found the MSN program in all its versions to be slow, buggy, and troublesome. Problems always occur when it is 'updated'. Sometimes problems are fixed by updating Windows Live Messanger. It's only advantage seems to be having local email folders.

I've a suggestion but have never tried it. Feel free to test it out.

Based on my understanding of what is said by the poster, it says that the contacts cached in 8.5 is not usable in 9.0.

Therefore, the same contacts file in 8.5 remains but is not readable by 9.0 'cos of the format difference.

You can try this:
1. Go to Options, Security, tick
"This is a share computer. Don't save my contacts..."
2. Log off your WLM. Untick "Remember me"
3. Right click tray icon (near the system clock) of WLM and Exit.
4. Launch WLM again and try login with your user name.

This method should clear whatever contacts that is left.
