If you are using vista with Internet Explorer 7...

1)Go to internet explorer
2)Go to Tools, click on internet options. Select Advanced.
3)Scroll down to security section, UNCHECK 'Check server certificate revocation*'

Good luck.

Anonymous said...

HEY GUYS: YOU HAVE TO RESTART YOUR MSN. That means you EXIT, and then start it again. Get it? Don't just try to sign in again and again. Follow the damn instructions.

Anonymous said...

I have had this problem with 80048820 Windows live Messenger unable to sign in for quite some time from Dec. 2007 until now off and on. at first just trying again fixed it then I had to regsvr32 to 11 .dll files I also checked my proxy settings in IE. Now none of that is working and I am getting 80048820 extended error code: 8004840a!!?? It would be nice if Microsoft knew about it's own error messages!!!! This is extremely bad when the developer doesn't know it's own error message!! What is going on what is the problem? ...

Anonymous said...

I've done everything, but i still doesn't work

As long as you SHUT down MSN before registering the DLL, it should operate when you restart MSN.

Anonymous said...

I tried everything but only formating HDD worked.. Everything was fine for almost a week but the problem occured again today..

And as someone already mentioned:
1. Can't access msn.com using IE
2. Can't access hotmail.com using msn[when it worked]
3. This problem is insolvable :/

None of these options work for me.
Win Xp pro SP 3 + all updates.
Kapersky AV
Newest version of Live messenger.
Can sign in on any other machine on this account, on this network.

Before installation I could access everything, now even MSN messenger is not working.

Anonymous said...

First sign of this problem was in 2006. It is 2009 and Microsoft still has not fixed this problem, or commented in any way on it that I can find.

After closing Messenger.
I checked date and re-synchronized with microsoft.

I set all IE setting back to normal.

I uninstalled messenger and re-installed.

I registerd the .DLL

I ensured no proxy settings were on my computer, in either IE or Messenger.

I cannot access hotmail through web page at www.msn.com.From this computer.

MIRC, Yahoo messenger, Google, and Skype all work without problems.

I checked CMOS settings.

I used a restore point.

I uninstalled IE and re-installed.

Windows Malicious software removal tool found nothing.

Spybot S&D food nothing.

Adware food nothing.

Mcafee found nothing.

Kapersky found nothing.

Norton found nothing.

'Check server certificate revocation*'
has never been checked.

Changed date to wrong one

Dan B said...

Honestly man, this didn't work at all.

Anonymous said...

Okay this didn't work for me but I managed to fix it. I tried changing the date, did nothing. Tried registering the .dll file; did nothing. I thought it wouldn't be the firewall thing because I don't use a third part firewall(i.e. I just use the default windows firewall).

Here's my fix:
Go to your taskbar, expand the thing by clicking the arrow and double click on Windows Security Alerts. At the bottom of the box that comes up click "Windows Firewall". In the new box that appears, click the Exceptions tab. Scroll down and uncheck "Windows Live Messenger".

I'm not sure why exactly this works, but it did. You can even check the box again after you open Messenger, and it still works.

Hope this helped someone.
