Solving error 80048820 - unable to sign in
Error code 80048820 is a common one with MSN Messenger 7.5 and Windows Live Messenger.
When you start MSN Messenger, you are unable to sign in.
“Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger at this time. Please try again later.”
Fix 80048820 MSN (Windows Live Messenger) Error.
-The system clock may be set incorrectly.
-The Dynamic Link Library (DLL) softpub.dll may not be registered on the system. -Internet Explorer may be using an invalid proxy server.
-Double click on the clock in the taskbar and make sure the system clock is set correctly.
-Register softpub.dll using the regsvr32.exe tool. Click Start, and then click Run
In the Open box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
# Restart MSN Messenger (WLM).
Remove any Internet Explorer proxy server settings.
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
2. In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
3. Click LAN Settings.
4. Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox.
5. Click OK and OK again Internet Options.

I hate to be an ass... but this didn't work for me, im still getting the problem.
My error message also mentions an "Extended error code"... as well as the 80048820 error code..... could this be something different?
this doesent work for me =( i'b got several other msn errors but when i fix them msn just throws a new one at me! :@ im getting Kiiinda pisst of right now ! :@ i hate my msn! :@

I can't get it to work, and I can't access my hotmail in internet explorer. I can, however, access it through firefox, and log into web messenger through firefox. Doesn't make an ounce of sense. Someone help!!!

make sure your date, time and year are correct. that will fix it
Check your date if its right and the clock, i tried all of it, and then finally tried watching the date....it was all correct except the month was wrong....i corrected it and it worked! make sure you check your date and clock!

ok i tried absolutly everythin to get my msnger workin all the advice on here followed it exactly, my date was set correctly n everythin i was completely losin my mind tryin to fix this so i decided id jus set the date to the wrong date so i set it back two months n suddenly it works its september but my comp is livin in july, if the date bein wrong is whats been causin this howcome its what fixed it for me n does that mean my date being correct caused the problem cos this jus retardiculous
having jus said that my advice to ppl who cant get these methods of fixing it to work, make ur date wrong n sign in then change it back once ur in. no logoic to it what so ever but worked for me

Close MSN BEFORE you start running those 2 files, because I failed too when I was logged off at msn, with the icon still in the right below corner. Close it down, it works.

If you are using vista with Internet Explorer 7...
1)Go to internet explorer
2)Go to Tools, click on internet options. Select Advanced.
3)Scroll down to security section, UNCHECK 'Check server certificate revocation*'
