Can't Install Windows Live Messenger
Are you having problems with installing Windows Live Messenger (WLM) or MSN Messenger on your PC or Notebook?
Some tips and possible solutions to solve WLM installation:
- Download the latest WLM version availible at Get.Live.com
- Update Windows XP or Vista through Windows Update
- Go to "C:\Program Files\Windows Live" and remove "Messenger" folder (note: replace "C" with your root drive letter)
- Go to "C:ProgramData" (note: replace "C" with your root drive letter) and delete both Windows Live Installer and WLInstaller if you have any
- Restart PC
- Run the installer
If you are still unable to get Messenger work, we recommend you to Download best registry cleaner to fix your errors and speed up your computer.

I am running Vista and if I download and use live messenger then my internet explorer or files on my desktop won't run, they open and shut down right away - Dell couldn't help and no answer from MSN on the problem - help
Have you downloaded 32-bit version for XP/Vista? It should work then. Tell me something more and I will try to solve this out for you.

Hey , I had encounter problem with my Webcam . Whenever I wanted to send/receive webcam , I just could not get through it . MSN will says that either MSN cannot connect between me and my friend or Try again later . After that , I would receive a window from MSN MESSENGER that shows an error and I would had to click on "Send Error or Dont Send" . Why is this happening ? I tried to uninstall and install again MSN but still the problem is there. I'm using MSN MESSENGER 7.5 . Please help me ! My webcam sending/receiving works fine with Yahoo Messenger but not MSN! Hi. I am using windows Vista. When I click on the link for installing Messenger, my Internet explorer says that I am not connected to the web. It seems that when I access .EXE files, instead of a pop-up for installation , I get directed to a website instead and hence I can't install. This problem also occurs when I try to install online games. I could install Messenger on my Windows XP, and no such problems occured. Why does this problem occur on my Windows Vista? Thanks.
Whenever I try to install WLM on my Vista laptop, I am able to download the file, but when I run the Windows Live Installer, the messenger program cannot be installed. I downloaded an older version of messenger to try and get around this, but it does not allow signing in of a more modern account! Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Hi, I ahev the same problem as mentioned above, it tells me i am not connected to the internet, which i am being able 2 access itunes store, all websites and downlaod programmes. I am using a wireless network conenction and have tried disabling all other netwrok connections but this has not solved the problem, Help would be much appreciated!

On my case, two services, "DCOM Server Process Launcher" and "Automatic Updates" are not running. After I started these two services, the installation process seems working just fine. I'm not sure which service in this case helps.

I have similar problems trying to download messenger, no matter what version I get an error which ends with messenger[1].exe is not a valid extension. All of this began after I formatted my hard drive. Initially I wasn't able to download yahoo messenger either but one day it finally completed the process.
Sorry, it ends with setup[1].exe is not a valid win32 application. Has anyone found a solution to this error?

I have the same problem, using the latest "liveball" from Microsoft, where they'd like you to use msn search bar, msn as home page, participate in their "product enhancement group" thing and you can also select to install a photo album, messenger and whatnot.
I only select MESSENGER and the setup program (from get.live.com) installs the "login assistant" (not sure if that's what's it called in English, as I use the Norwegian version) and when it goes on to install Live Messenger, it just goes .."couldn't install Messenger, would you like to try later?" - and places the installer on my desktop if I click the 'Try Later' button. Same thing happens if I try to install the photo album, for some reason.
My Windows (XP) is fully patched and everything worked fine up until now. Even tried removing the lot, rebooting, reinstalling - to no avail.
And of course the "help suggestions" included states that I should check my disk space (more than 200 gigs available, and the prog itself should check, shouldn't it?), my internet connection/proxy/firewall.
Duh.
IT'S ALL PERFECTLY FINE.
But the Live thing really sucks.
Microsoft is a worthless and necessary evil. They don't write good products and don't even support them. Looked all over their site for a fix and thanks to you, their product now works. They should be paying you for your services, the God forsaken @ss maggots!

Why don't you guys just do a full STANDALONE MSN MESSENGER installation file. This will take care all your firewall and most of problems

Holy smacks I have been trying to get around this problem almost the whole day, then I saw on a site that the solution is to check ya time and date settings, make sure that they are correct. My problem was I had under the Interet Time to Automatically Synchronize with and Internet time Server. So check your settings and let me know if that help.
I asks a co-worker how to fix this after all the posts on this blog failed.... anyways, this worked for me and may work for you.
start the run command and type in the following without the ""
"regsvr32 wups2.dll"
There is a space between the regsvr32 and the wups2.dll.
Hit ok and then you can install MSN Live. This is related to Service Pack 3.

I did not understand the instructions given to fix msn so it did not work but I discovered the best way to download windows live messenger 9.0 on windows vista that worked for me and I am currently using it and it works wonderfully!!! Worked great, was easy and didn't involve all kinds of restarting and deleting. Besides the fact that I didn't have a meesenger folder in my windows live folder, since I was working off a clean install, good luck everyone. MS just gets worse and worse about making things work correctly.

I've just reinstalled my Windows Vista, only to find the Windows Live Installer not work, saying "installation canceled" unexpectedly. I searched for solutions and found this page. I found WLInstaller folder in ProgramData, deleted it and restarted my PC. It's so good to see the installation running well.

I just deleted all the files located in the live and messenger folders.
Then I did the install and it worked.

I tried what was suggested and it did not work, every time I tried to install it it just failed and then as soon as it failed Windows Live Messengers loaded and signed me in even though it said it failed so i don't know what the hell is going on but its working now =/

So yeah, I'm so mad about this whole 'beta' new stuff. I didn't know anything about it thought was just an upgrade and stuff.. so I did it, but I didn't like it and I tried to delete it and there wasn't an option so then I got someway to do it and uninstalled messenger live, beta, everything. And now when I try to download any version of msn it says

I have been trying to download windows live messenger for over a week. It gets to 99% and won't go any further. After about 15 mins a red "X" & "Not Installed" appears where the 99% used to be. Not sure why this is happening, sign in assist installed fine at the same time. I am able to use the email facility perfectly, just not messenger. Would it be recommended to uninstall and try again??? Please help :(
hii. sorry, its still not working, im on windows xp computer, and ive tried to reinstall it, cause of a problem. ive tried to reinstall.i couldn't even download it from the site, used www.download.com instead. i open the exe file and it checks for my computer if there are any windows live programs. then it stops saying "unable to install" i've had spyware on my computer, but does that affect it?

So I tried to reinstall, it tells me that it is already installed but it isnt anywhere, I have tried search and the program file and windows folder.

Go get msn messenger 7.0 from www.oldversion.com and then log in.. it's gonna ask u to update.. update it and there you go !! im doing it right now and its wroking while anything i found here didnt....

Hey there.I have tried to install the latest Windows Lie Messenger 2009.I got it through softpedia.com as an offline installer msi.The problem is that whenever i try to install it,all it does is show that the files have been extracted.No installation starts.In the folder "c:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger" it shows that the files are extracted.When i click on msnmgs.exe or somethin,it runs but doesnt login showing error 80040154,i tried to reregister msxml3.dll,even reinstallin it,even formatting the pc...What do i do?

i have tried several times to install the new live messenger, and it repeatedly just told me it couldnt do it, with no kind of explanation, and no helpful trouble shooting.

as opposed to just downloading messenger, i got a tonne of other programs as well. but importantly, it DID install WLM (after a lengthy wait)

I went to open MSN live messenger qnd I was prompted to download a newer version otherwise could not sign in. So here we go but after trying to download it said it failed error 80004002. Looked everywhere to fix it it seemed rather complicate operations with removing everything and put it back or getting an older version. Tried "regsvr32 wups2.dll"

i had the following problem:
u cant install msn messenger as a newer version is already installed. (i use vista) i coundt find it on the uninstall list through control panel... so i manually deleted it from program files. Thats when all hell broke lose and started gettin woierd error codes. After searching for solutions on the internet i came across zap messenger downloaded it ran the exe file took 2 seconds then ran the wml installer and its working thank god ... but it is taking a hell of alot of time though hope it works... will let u know if it does

Also says theres another program interfering with it, but it's the only one open....

I have removed Window Live Message absolutely and deleted all its related folders. Now I cannot find it anywhere in my computer, but the system still requires me to remove WLM to install again(?!).
I can't install it either. My problem is that it says I need administrator access but the thing is, I'm already on the admin account so I don't know what to do. a regualr problem with the latest version of msn (OF WICH THERE ARE TOO MANY ISSUES) is that every week or so you cant log in as it cant resovle host file names, and often the advice falls WELL short from official msn crew.
then when you uninstal it and e-instal it thinks it is already installed, WHAT A MALLARKY!
so i found this, it gets rid of all the crap that the ininstller shud, and makes frsh space for a re-instaling HOWVER.
get ZapMessenger (google for latest version. it is a peice of software, SAFE and will instal itself, and when u start it up, asks you to clik "start" then it gets rid of all the crap left behind in msn folder. you can NOW re-instal, BUT you will HAVE to get rid of live sign in assistant too or it will still think you have msn installed.
DONT re-instal the latest version instal, instead VERSION 8 at most, until, they get these issues sorted, in fact many of the team have made ME feel to blame when THEIR advice has fallen short.
so basically you are doing nothing wrong, latest msn is too "buggy" and shudnt hav been released yet at all. so its NOT your fualt

msn newest msn (as in the one from march/april this year 2009) tends to not let you log in after a weeks use, and dies this every week or two.
you MUST uninstal,
then when you do, it cant instal as it thinks it is already, GRRRR
SO you NEED to use ZapMessenger to get rid of it fiully, AND get rid of live sign in assistant
THEN reinstal a version no later than version 8..
then you will have plain sailing, (tho u may need avery while to re-intstal, u now have zapmessenger to help) enjoy

USE ZAPMESSENGER as NONE of the official live/msn advixe at all worked for those errors at all, except to send something that was MEANT to do what ZapMessenger ACTUALLY does (wextract or something like that)

Ok, i wanted to install the older, 8.1 version of Windows Live Messenger but i had the newest 2009 version installed.
So when i went to uninstall it through Programs and Features, there was nothing there that seamed to be for it so i deleted it through Program Files.
I then found out that you can uninstall it through Programs and Features, its just under a unobvious name, so i also did this and now when i try and install the old 8.1 version or the new 2009 version again, it is telling me it is still installed...
But there is no data on my system in Programs or Program files. So i dont know where it is reading this data from. Please help sort this.

This is crap, to put it bluntly. I've done all that has been advised and still can't install WLM. If this is Microsoft's idea of service and ingenuity, then they have a serious problem. The old version was topnotch. This is unbelievably frustrating and I give up. Also, I give up on anything from Microsoft that I absolutely don't have to have. They are in it for the money and release things before debugging them. Good luck with Windows 7, I see the same thing happening with it. It will be Vista light and still the same bloated OS catering to gamers and the like. Netbook for me. Let them eat cake, no that's too good for them. Let them eat the crumbs.
I recieved the e-mail stating i had to upgrade to a 9.6 version so I did the install and it wouldn't connect to the internet, though my old desktop icon still would. I called tech support, they had me delete the old messnger and then restore my system -.- which caused my system to crash and no longer load windows at all. THEN.. they told me "sorry, the new problem is with windows and you will have to contect microsoft tech support to have it fixed", so I did, and they told me that since XP was bought out, it would cost me $60 just to have them "attempt" by phone tech support. In the end I had to have a freind take my pc apart and switch things around so that it would boot from my restore disc and am now in the process of reinstalling 5 years worth of updates and upgrades just to get my programs to go back to being compatible with one another.... I've decided Qwest, MSN, and Microsoft are more trouble than they are worth, and am buying a Mac.
i used a program called revo uninstaller to get rid of my old windows live messenger then the install of the newer version worked 1st time

to install MSN 2009, download " Wlsetup-custom" which is 1.09 mb...and download "dotnetfx" and also "WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86"....now install dotnetfx and the last widnowsxp--....after that opend wlsetup-custom....u will find it open and mark messenger install....there u are.. :)

I've tried to install MSN 2009,the newest one,although I've already removed the msn,couldn't even find a trace of it,even tried the clear registry errors and restarted,and tried to install again,it told me it's installed,but I still couldn't find the trace of it.Can anyone please teach me how to fix?
I can not install the new msn messenger. I click "run" for it to work, but it keep telling me that I'm not connected to the internet. How i need to solve this problem??
