how do i disable all options? i didn't install any of the add-ons, but i don't think that's what it's referring to. is it disable options through the live messenger menu?

Anonymous said...

ok i found out how to disable the options but the troubleshoot screen is not popping up. can i manually start it?

Anonymous said...

it hasnt worked for me... tried it twice just in case i messed up the first time but it wasnt doing squat. its still just freezing right after i sign in - i see my buddy list, and then it dies and says "not responding"

Anonymous said...

I have the exact same problem but only in the last few days...

It did work briefly when I deleted the MSNMessenger entry in the registry and then reinstalled Live Messenger but only until it rebooted. Then exaclty the same, logs on, shows buddy list then sits there 'Not Responding'. Eventually it disconnects and reconnects itself... locks up again etc etc. This is a nightmare problem!!

I had same problem. It seems fixed now.

THEN ITS JUST CYCLES ROUND AND ROUND.

This is Microsoft for you, probably thousands of people send error reports all the time, and they fix nothing. Just like registry problems... you think they'd fix that with XP... or even Vista... Nope... what a horrible company.

Anonymous said...

I have this problem i press log in, buddy list appears and then it freezes. i have a little sugjestion tont end the program let it be for about 2 min then it tries to reconnect press connect now it freezes for a min but after that it starts working again just tond log aout and you'll be fine until restart or shutdown.

Anonymous said...

so i mus be stupid or something cuz these directions go in one ear and out the other. What the hell does it mean by the ipconfig thing? I go to run. THEN WHAT?

Anonymous said...

You are not stupid, the instructions are very vague.
So far I have gathered:
1.Uninstall the Windows Live Messenger program from Add or Remove Programs Tool which is located in the Control Panel.
2.Reboot your machine.
3.There are folders located on your C drive:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
and possibly
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger
that need to be deleted.
I’m not sure about these folders since the author was not very clear about this.
4.Re-install Windows Live Messenger by running the file Install_Messenger.exe (downloadable at the Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Site)
5.After the install and before you run WLM disable all the options (I have no clue what is meant by this)
6.Under Control Panel choose Network and Internet Connections then choose Network Connections.
7.Right click on Local Area Connection (usually named this although a number may be appended to it) and click Disable
8.Click the Start Button and choose the Run Option.
9.Type “cmd” (without the quotes) and click OK
10.at the dos prompt type “ipconfig /release” (without the quotes…mind the spacing though)
11.Open Windows Live Messenger.
12.According to the author, at this point a repair process should start.
13.Choose repair and wait for the process to finish
14.Go back to Control Panel and choose Network and Internet Connections then choose Network Connections.
15.Right Click on Local Area Connection and click Enable.
16.Start WLM and enable all the options you had disabled in the previous step 5.
All should now be well (it didn’t work for me, I am assuming I did not delete the correct folders)
Good Luck

Install the live messenger latest version and you´ll fix that. I had de same problem, and this worked for me.

Anonymous said...

Have followed the instructions to the letter but when the 'Repair' option was supposed to appear (having uninstalled, reinstalled, disablled internet, unchecked all options........), nothing, nada, didly squat!
Tried Messenger and as before, contacts appear but then it just freezes. How damn inconvenient! (I could be stronger, but mustn't offend!)

Anonymous said...

I have got the same problem. It froze and not responding after signed in and buddy list appeared. It recovered and active again automatically when you leave it there for about 3-4 minutes.

Anonymous said...

I seem to be having a problem. I have installed Live Messenger twice, on two separate occasions now, and both times they have caused problems. Now, my add/remove programs list does not show up. All I get is a message saying "list is being produced" or whatever. I tried going to safe mode, but you cannot uninstall live messenger from safe mode. Is there any answer?

Anonymous said...

Which 'not responding' tutorial ACTUALLY works? Has anyone tried them yet, because I dont want to try any thats going to fuck up my laptop at the end of the day then I'll be pissed...anyone help me out pleaseeeeeeeeeee :)

Anonymous said...

I had same problem before: MSN is not responding. I've been getting this error for ages.

Solutions posted here is working just fine.

Unknown said...

I tried it, didnt work for me, and im having the exact same problem, as soon as I log in, I see my friends list, then it freezes up. For now im using Trillian http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/
You have have all of your IM's all in one(MSN, AIM, ICQ, YIM etc.), you do lose some features such as reciving offline messages but its better than having no msn.

Anonymous said...

Sorted it.

It appears the crash is caused by windows live trying to load the windows live today window.

Unfortunately the option to disable this is unique to each passport (account) so the only way to disable it (typically) is ot sign in!

If you sign in it will crash when trying to load the window. Just go away and leave it for a while and it will eventually give up and start responding again. Once it does go to tools then options. Then under the general tab unclick the option to load windows live today.

Now when signing in in the furture on that passport it won't try to load and hence won't crash.

Sorted.. I hope :D .

Thats From Anonymous and I correct some things

1.Uninstall the Windows Live Messenger program from Add or Remove Programs Tool which is located in the Control Panel.
2.There are folders located on your C drive:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
and possibly
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger
that need to be deleted.
I’m not sure about these folders since the author was not very clear about this.
3.Re-install Windows Live Messenger by running the file Install_Messenger.exe (downloadable at the Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Site)
4.After the install and before you run WLM disable all the options (For example the options it gives u for install.. like make msn homepage and so on...)
5.Click the Start Button and choose the Run Option.
6.Type “cmd” (without the quotes) and click OK
7.at the dos prompt type “ipconfig /release” (without the quotes…mind the spacing though)
8.Open Windows Live Messenger.
9.Choose Sign In.. At this point a Troubleshooter will appear.. Click Fix and then repair.. and repair process should start.
10.Wait for the process to finish
11.The network will come back enable by itself (thats what mine did)
12.Start WLM ANd disable the options in general that "start msn at windows start, at internet conectoins start and something like that"
All should now be well (it work for me)
Good Luck

I had the same frustrating problem and the following post dated 12/5/2007 sorted out my problem ... simple. Hope it works for you! I had already reinstalled the program 3 times at this stage.

"Sorted it.

Hi, I had this problem just tonight and it seems i cleared it up by what a few of the previous posts said.

It DOES seem that it crashes because of the Windows Live Today window, and if most of you have notices, this pops up seconds after WML has loaded. I was quick (or lucky) enough to sign in and disable it, so you guys should try do the same. To save you the precious time frame its:

Tools -> General -> Untick Show Windows Live Today after i sign in to Messenger.

Good Luck.
Peace.

OK guys to those that have problems with msn everytime they click any option just like the audio and webcam setup and freezes ur msn well i also had this problem and took me hours to find out the reason, i don't know about you guys but the problem was the internet connections i have cable sharing a router with another computer , the problem was solved that every time that i disconnected the internet nic cable i was able to access the any msn option without freezing my msn so now i said i can access the options now but there's no point without internet so what i did was i turned off my computer and unplugged all my internet connections unplugged cable modem from the outlet and plugged everything back after 3-4 minutes and turned my computer on and the problem was gone after so much frustration by the way i downloaded the msn beta just in case you guys wanted to try it out and it worked, hope this helps good luck.

Most of my problem with Live Messenger has been with Sharing folders.

Disabling the following services and then rebooting resolved it:

Anonymous said...

i already disabled my window live today thingy and it still freezes after like 2 minutes. This is getting realy annoying and its been going on for a week already.Someone plz help!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I cant understand this problem!! I have already formatted my PC twice, and its STILL not working!! I have tried all of the suggested solutions, but all in vain! It still would remain in freezing mode !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I found a temporary way to avoid the crash but it will get rly annoying later. If you don't want to crash sign in as appear offline or after you sign in immediately change ur status to appearing offline. It won't crash if you appear offline but then people won't know if youre online and stuff like that. So i'm justing doing this till I find a way to fix it.

Anonymous said...

everyone here who posted something about how to fix it is a fucking dumbass.I tried EVERYTHING that is posted here and NOTHING works.screw u all

Remember to write Ipconfig /release

Not Ipconfig release, since that wont restart your net.

Hey all! I've just read (and thoroughly) each and everyone of your comments.

To be fair, I'm have similar problems. To be blunt who the (bleep) is running this forum (Q&A) isn't obviously being the least (bleeping) helpful. It seems were all wits end here on what to do. Is Microsoft too (bleeping) lazy and ignorant to help us a little here?

I have the latest Windows Live Messenger (9.0). I had been running the 8.5 which worked (and has been) working great. I thought it would be nice to "update" to the newer one. Now since doing this almost immediately it says those infamous words: NOT RESPONDING. Then on top of that BS, my laptop starts to feel a wee bit warmer than usual - all because of this tiny little friggon application!! WTF I say! So anyways, I feel your pain everyone. I do. We need answers, not mumbo jumbo!

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite running Windows Vista Home Premium. It's about year old now. Anyways - that is all.

Hope (and emphasis on HOPE) we can get some HELP here.

Unknown said...

I'm also having problems with Not responding since an upgrade to 8.5+. It does eventually respind when trying to chat to a contact but I have to wait for the timer clock for ages - not good. Once I have connected the chatting responses are quick its just establishing alink with your contact takes ages, also leaving an offline message. I wonder if MSN know of this issue? Sorry I do not have a solution, I am not sure there is one at the moment. I don't know if it is my set-up or Windows live servers slow to connect to contacts?

Anonymous said...

I faced the same with with xp and vista and win 7, and spent 20 hours to solve this issue

change the router

the router was the problem

every software need access to internet working ok

except msn messenger and live mail
- aftter I change my router (usrobotics) the problems dies.

dont waste ur time and try to connect ur ps or laptob to any other available hotspot wifi and check

Anonymous said...

kaay so heres my problem...i loaded up my msn and then as it was signing in..it froze!! now its says not responding...but the part that pisses me off the most is that its been like this for HOURS!!!!:@ HELP ME!!! also it wont even let me exit the damn thing

Anonymous said...

its the windows live trying to open when you sign in. go to tools, general tab you can unclick it. it worked for me, easy easy, dont mess around with all that other crap. when you sign in though you have to be quick before it crashes. also uninstall live sign in assistant. reboot and you'll be away laughing

Anonymous said...

Hey, I had this problem of msn freezing when i signed in. I thought it was something to do with the Today news page and saw the previous comments about this, so gave it a go....

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!

You have to be quick though and you have to sign in as Available - this gives you more time.

Go to Tools > Options > Sign In > and then un-tick Show Windows Live Today after I sign into Messenger > Apply > OK

Yayyy, hope it works for others.

Thanks ;)

Anonymous said...

I read the previous comment and gave it a try as well

"Go to Tools > Options > Sign In as Available > and then un-tick Show Windows Live Today after I sign into Messenger > Apply > OK" quoted from previous comment

and YEA IT WORKS ON MY MSN TOO!
