Windows Media Player and Messenger - Now Playing Plugin

Where do I find the plug-in for Windows Media Player that lets me show contacts what music I'm listening to on Windows Live Messenger?

Open Windows Media Player. In Tools menu you'll see Plug-ins. Check Windows Live messenger Music Plug-in.
And in Live Messenger, under your status you have and a down arrow. Click the arrow and select Turn On "What I'm listening too"

Solution 2:

1) Enable the Now Playing option in MSN,
2) Go to your MSN Messenger (Windows Live Messenger) folder in Program Files,
3) Find the "msgrapp.dll" file,
4) Copy it to your Windows Media Player 11 folder (in Program Files too),
5) Restart your play

For Windows Media Player 11, do the following:

1) Open Windows Media Player 11

2) Under the "Now Playing" tab, click "more Options"

3) In the "Plug-ins" tab there will be a category list box. In that list box click Background. To the right of it should be the "windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in" Make sure that is checked.

Anonymous said...

excellent , thx!

I had a horrible time trying to get both Windows Media Player and Winamp to display my songs on MSN with Windows Vista. Turns out I just had to go to "Run as administrator" when I turn on MSN and Winamp/WMP. I don't know why, since I AM the Administrator but anyway, hope this helps Vista users.

Anonymous said...

listen to what the vista guy said

you have to "Run as administrator"

the other guy about XP

just make sure your accont is an admin one

go to control panel then user accounts check with that

I can't enable "Show what I'm listening to" in WLM because I get an error saying there's an error in wmp installation please blablabla. I reinstalled wmp 11 fresh today and it didn't work. Nothing works.

does it matter that the file i found was named "msgrapp.dll" is supposed to be a version "8.1.0178.00." and says "Msn Messenger Protocol Handler" instead of maybe "Msn Messenger Now Playing Plugin" because i still can't find the box to tick in the 'Background' area. There is just no mention of Msn Messenger Plugin in my WMP11. Should i download my msn again? because i just downloaded my WMP11 again and that seems to make no difference.

hey i did everything, and still when i check the box in MSN, it tells me i must have windows media player 9.0 or later... but ive installed windows media 11 about 3 times...and re-installed MSN... any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

I did exactly what you said, and it worked! Thanks a lot; it helped - in order to get it back you do need to be a little computer savvy.

Anonymous said...

I do it!!!
for the ones that still struggle with that message "... windows media player 9.0 or later ..."
seems that msn is searching for a "IsInstalled" registry key that is missing in wmp 11 component registry.
Set this and the thing is solved!

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6}]
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001

IF EVERYTHING JUST FAILS:

I have been trying to fix this for ages... Nothing seemed to fix it.

The solution for me was a little weird. Follow it and see if it solves your problem!

1. Create a new User in Vista.
2. Logon with the new User.
3. Enable the plugin in WMP and in Live Messenger. It should magically work...
4. Log off and log on again with your normal account. It should work now and you can delete the new User account you created.

IT WORKS!!

thnx it works

I just bought my laptop Acer AOA-150 a few days ago, but i dunno why when i start a voice conversation on msn messenger or skype the other persons voice keeps on breaking up. while on my other laptop it sounds great with no problems. however listening to music or watching a video sound fine.

anybody experience the same? or know of a solution?
i just don't wanna return it.

Anonymous said...

Well this solution is great, but msn will only show the songs that are in your WMP Library, when I play songs that aren't in my WMP Library they don't show up on msn...

Thanks man! solved my problem on Windows 7.

In Windows 7 it comes with 64 bit Windows Media Player 12 (default) in c:\Program Files.
It will only work with the 32 bit version of Windows Media Player in c:\Program Files (x86).
The easiest way is to either pin the 32 bit version to the start menu or create a desktop shortcut else you have to mess around with the RegEdit

Anonymous said...

meh nothing seems to fix this msgrapp 14.0 error. i simply dont understand.

Anonymous said...

I tried enabling it in the programs but no go.. but with a hind from this site I found that
by going to regedit under[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\

and then going through the list of weird numbers until I saw one mentioning media player and doubleclicked on "IsInstalled" and set the value data to 1 from 2 and it worked.

This is where I found it on mine.
Win7-64

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\>{22d6f312-b0f6-11d0-94ab-0080c74c7e95}

Hi. I have the same problem. I worked a bid stupidly in on the key register because I tried to install wmp 12 and then my media player was corrupted (with dark menu textes and so on), so I deleted all the register keys and reinstalled wmp11 and the corruption problem was fixed. So everything works except the "Now Playing plugin" that is not viewable in both MSN and WMP11. If I try to enable the plugin from MSN a message like that appear: "An error accoured during MSN installation, try to access as amministrator and and restore". If I try on WMP the plugin is missing even in the option-background etc. What should I do?

Victor Santos (Rebellion765) said...

whew! thanks a lot! it worked well!

pls i need a serious help, im waiting since yearss to find a solution about how can i activate "now playing plugin" in MSN, always it said me : "you should have media player 9 codec or later"
thx alot for giving me any trick even a regitry trick to bypass detecting of WMP 9 Codec.
