Fix 80040111 and 80040154 Error.
Cause: MSXML library may be corrupted and may have to be reinstalled
Troubleshooting steps:
Step 1. Re-register msxml3.dll
- Click on the Start menu, select Run and type the following:
Regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll
Hopefully, you will see a window popup that says: DllRegisterServer succeeded in C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll is succeeded.
Step 2. Restart your computer and sign into Messenger again

If running regsvr32 fails with an error then try downloading and installing 'Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7)' from Microsoft instead.
This fixed the problem for me and also fixed a 'mail subscription required' error when trying to connect Outlook 2003 to Hotmail via the Outlook Connector.

Didn't work for me either. Btw, my Messenger is version 2009 (Build 14.0.8050.1202).
i tried the suggestions listed in the main message, as well as in the posts, but no luck.
i'm running server 2008, and i just installed WLM version 2009 (build 14.0.8050.1202). i get the 80040154 error even after trying re-registering the msxml3.dll, and reinstalling msxml3. i double checked the firewall settings just to be sure, and that seems to be fine as well.
any help would be appreciated!

Okay what you need to do to get the latest version build 14 to work in x64 XP PRO. You need to do this in the following stages:
1. Install the latest messenger msi file from someone one who has it on their 32 bit machine. The file can be found at: C\program files\commonfiles\windows live\.cache\(some long number folder look for messenger
2. Install the latest contacts msi file again you will find this in the same location as above just a different folder. Install this and latest msn messenger will start working.

1. Ran 'Windows Install Cleanup' utility (look for a file on the net called msicuu2.exe
2. 'Killed' anything with the word 'Live' in it (!)
3. Downloaded Windows Live Messenger 2009 from FileHippo (no reason other than an unfair suspicion that Microsoft are trying to drive me nuts, so lets see if another server has a version containing special magic dust that makes software work properly :-)
4. Installed it and it worked. No idea why, but then mine is the Inspector Clouseau approach to computing.
Yeah... it works after installing the contact msi...

After an initial re-register of the msxml3.dll, I ended up getting ANOTHER error code (8004882e), but the above linky still fixed it all for me.
This is the ONLY tip that has been any help for me. Have struggled with MSN-problem for 6 months now - but no problem after this tip, try it:

Well, ive been having a lot of problems with my msn over the last week, i have uninstalled it reinstalled it, tried older versions and nothing, so i got stuck with the error code 80007007e but i fixed it with regcure, now im getting this 80040154 Error ive done the thing with regsvr32 and i get DllRegisterServer succeeded in C:\Windows\System32\msxml3.dll is succeeded., so therefore it should be working, i restarted and still just keep getting the same error........
Everything worked but when i start msn the same problem came back error 80040154 :S

if the above suggestion dosnt work, that is to say, registering the .dll for error 80040154, then i usually un-instal, then use ZapMessenger (google it, its a free and simple safe programme designed to take away all the crap that messenger does and leaves)
it may not always work, though usually will.
if it dosnt work, try installing a version earlier than the 2009 msn after using ZapMessenger...
if above very helpful suggestion dosnt work for ypu(remembering you NEED to restart for it to take effect) then uninstal, then instal ZapMessenger, (google it, its free and safe) it will clear out all msn related scrap left from uninstal, then also remove windows live,
reinstal msn/live, and it SHOULD now be ok.
IF NOT, try an earlier pre-2009 version of msn

hey, it didn't work for me, i had tried uninstalling msn and now it doesn't appear in my uninstall section but its still working, i looked in the program files in my computer there is a Windows Live file with a sub-folder titled messenger and the messenger still works, it just wont sign me in. anyone know how to make it work?

Found out a way of fixing. Worth a go, anyway. Download that Contacts.msi, and go to Run. Type this:
msiexec /x {3B4E636E-9D65-4D67-BA61-189800823F52}
That uninstalls your current contacts.msi. Now, click the one you downloaded, let it install, bingo, no error.

After trying dozens of so called fixes, some the same as above like re registering mx blah blah blah I was getting seriously frustrated. After many attemps at other fixes I made up my own based on other peoples experiences and this one worked.
I downloaded msicuu2.exe, do a google search for it and download it. Run the program and remove anything with the word "live" in it. You might also want to download Zapmessenger, once again it is easily found on google, download and run it.
I downloaded both programs and ran them. I then went in to program files to delete anything with the words "windows live" and did the same in the "common files " folder of C: drive.
I restarted and then downloaded an older version of messenger, google msn messenger older versions.
I downloaded version 8.5.1235 and installed this and it worked fine.
Once I was sure it was working fully I restarted my pc and then downloaded the latest version of messenger and it worked first time.
I hope this works for you if you are getting the same error code and had enough of it.
Hey there..had the same problem and nothing has worked till i tried to repair the messenger through control panel, add and remove programms, windows live essentials and then NOT uninstall but REPAIR the programm.then i restarted my pc and now its working...
